FOLDING CHAIR
DESIGNER: Unknown
MATERIAL: Rosewood with ply seat
STYLISTIC INFLUENCE: Colonial

STRUCTURAL FEATURES: An early patent of the simple wooden folding chair lay with US-based John Cham, who designed it in 1855. The design of the chair features its folding pivot directly under the seat. The back legs and the narrow, U-shaped seat itself form a 90-degree angle when the chair is in the unfolded position. Folding chairs are a regular fixture in modern life, used especially when permanent seating is not easy. Owing to their light weight, portability and versatility — that they can be folded flat and easily stacked up or lined in rows — they are mainly mass produced.

STYLISTIC FEATURES: While the chair does not have a full, distinct backrest, the curved toprail is broad, with edges that bend upwards. The backrest of is connected to the front legs, tilting from the back and crossing the seat near the centre and narrow stretchers connect the legs of the chair.
