STRAIGHT-BACK DINING CHAIR
DESIGNER: Unknown
MATERIAL: Wood, cane
STYLISTIC INFLUENCE: Indo-Dutch

STRUCTURAL FEATURES: This sturdy straight-back side chair without arms is perhaps part of a set of four or six chairs, probably used as dining chairs and is replete with strong, three-dimensional accents. It is characterised by bold accents and curled, curved forms.

STYLISTIC FEATURES: The chair features restrained detailing to the serpentine toprail and a twisted or braided spindle-like decoration along the vertical slats of the back. The cane seat as well as the cane backrest are intricately woven, comprising a repetitive rhombus-shaped pattern. The legs are also symbolic of spiral carving, joined by an ‘H’-shaped stretcher.
