CHENNAKESAVA TEMPLE, BELUR
MATERIAL: Steatite
YEAR: 1117 AD

The Chennakesava Temple at Belur was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana and is built in the Hoysala style of architecture. Twenty-eight ornate screens, all different, cover the exterior of the structure. These jalis are interspersed with exquisite carvings depicting scenes from the Puranas or intricate geometric patterns. Previously open pillars enclosed the inner mandapa; it is suggested that these jalandhras – as screens are locally known – were inserted later, in the 13th century.

Mallikarjuna Temple is fashioned in the Dravidian idiom and was commissioned by Trailokya Mahadevi, the queen of Vikramaditya II. This structure closely imitates the Virupaksha temple in elevation, suggesting that both projects were conceived as matching monuments.
