MELAMINE

Melamine is invented in Germany in the 1830s but the compound will be applied to make plastics and laminates only a century later. Just as Bakelite does for radios and telephones, Melamine will usher in an era of new, colourful forms in the kitchen. The materialis shatterproof, easy to maintain and for Indians, it will be indicative of the American way of living. However, due to import restrictions, Melamine will not be easily available in the domestic market and relatives travelling abroad will bring back dinner sets for the home.

With changing trends Melamine will gradually go out of fashion and by the advent of microwaves, it will be replaced by bone china and glass completely.
