SILVERWARE

In the West, silver has been particularly popular for cutlery since the metal is inert and does not interfere with the food’s taste.

In India, the reason for favouring silverware is different. The metal is believed to have nutrition-enhancing qualities and so the affluent often eat in silver thalis and katoris.

Silverware even makes for dignified gifts, particular upon the birth of a child. Miniature spoons, cups and glasses are custom-made for the baby because the metal helps build immunity, fight bacteria and cool the body. This custom will persist even in the next millennia, but as the metal will get costlier, some families will opt for German silver, which is silver-plated nickel.
