PAINTED DOMED CHEST
MATERIAL: Teak wood, iron fittings
STYLE: Indo-Portuguese

STRUCTURAL FEATURES: The Portuguese, during their rule in India, had begun commissioning furniture such as writing tables, sewing boxes and trunks to the local craftsmen. The lid of the chest is cambered — outwardly convex in its structure, and shaped like a dome. The fittings are made out of iron and while its base is completely flat and levelled, it is elevated onto a custom-made wooden stand.

STYLISTIC FEATURES: The apron or skirting of the stand has a floral, swirling scroll-like pattern along its edges and S-shaped legs that curve outwards. The lid is hinged and the two clasps that make provision for locking are decorated with a pendanted pattern. A coat of green paint lends a strikingly distinct look to the chest.
