DIWAN-I-KHAS, RED FORT, DELHI
MATERIAL: Marble
YEAR: 1648

It is widely acknowledged that the arts and architecture reached their zenith under the connoisseurship of Shah Jahan. The Red Fort was built by him in 1648, when he shifted the capital from Agra to Delhi. The complex remained the royal residence for all suceeding Mughal emperors, right up to the British times.

The decorative elements at Red Fort reveal a succinct amalgamation of Indian, Persian and European influences. The complex holds examples of how naturalistic elements were worked into Mughal jalis. Similar to geometric patterns, here too, the underlying formation is symmetric - with floral ornamentation being arranged in circles or diamond-shaped compartments. A sense of contained fluidity is retained as these frames are made of leafy extensions, with the intersections featuring flowers.
