The year is 1923 and Godrej has just begun manufacturing their steel Safe Cabinets. Initial
models closely resemble wooden cupboards and feature adjustable shelves, the option of
internal lockers and drawers and half or full-length mirrors.
In the 1950s, these cabinets will evolve into Storwel cupboards that will be sought after to such a degree that, right through the next decade, the company will register waiting lists of two to three months for it. And for many generations to come, a ‘Godrej’ will be the dearest object in Indian homes.
