The bespoke red charpoy is also one of Ayush Kasliwal’s versions of the indigenous charpai or Indian daybed. Its structure is created using shisham wood, a spindle-like pattern adorns all four legs, and the seating made out of recycled rope in a coloured weave.
Preceding Kasliwal’s designs, in 2007, furniture designers Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien conceptualise the Moroso Charpoy comprising a handmade cotton and silk mattress adorned with embroidery. The embroidered parts represent a game similar to draughts, and the cushion covers – either cotton calico or tussor silk – involve hand-workmanship from Gujarat. Similarly, later, Delhi-based installation artist and designer Alex Davis would fashion a stainless steel charpoy, hand-polished for a mirrored finish.
