FEATURES: The Knock down Chair designed by the eminent late NID Professor MP Ranjan is an iconic example of using design to spearhead larger ecological, ethical and social concerns, addressing sustainability, craftsmanship, fair trade, and dignity for local craftspeople. Located in western Tripura, the village of Katlamara is well known for the Bambusa affinis species of bamboo. In 2005, Ranjan initiated the ‘Katlamara Chalo Workshop’ to create new products out of the locally cultivated bamboo, thus stimulating the local economy by helping to create micro and small enterprises. One of the products is this highly functional knock-down bamboo chair, easily dismantled and assembled. Ranjan distributed full-scale drawings of the design of the chair, free of cost, to the artisans of Katlamara, thus creating a sense of empowerment and self-sufficiency among them.
