TEXTILE FOLDING CHAIR
DESIGNER: Unknown
MATERIAL: Wood with a canvas seat
STYLISTIC INFLUENCE: Campaign

STRUCTURAL FEATURES: This is an example of British campaign furniture whose structure involves an amalgam of features of two colonial-style chairs -- the classic planter’s chair, as well as the Roorkhee chair. The durable canvas seat alludes to the Roorkhee chair -- the nomenclature of which can be attributed to the Indian Army Corps of Engineers in Roorkhee – which was widey used by British officers from the late-1880s to around the Second World War. The wooden frame with long armrests, however, is a striking characteristic of the planter’s chair.

STYLISTIC FEATURES: The wooden frame of the reclining back is affixed with a foldable canvas which extends to form the backrest as well as the seat. The two ends at the top of the backrest above the arms have a wingback protrusion. A double-railed footrest forms a conduit-like structure between the two forelegs. The design is simple, functional and robust, allowing for portability as well as wear and tear
