This is a folio from the Jain manuscript of Kalpasutra and KalakacharyaKatha. According to legend, which could probably date back to circa 1st century AD, it depicts the king Gardabhilla of Ujjain presented before Kalakacharya, the warrior Jain monk. It is indicative of the Jain monk seated on an ornate throne with a metal structure and seemingly rich upholstery. His left foot rests on what appears to be a footstool, equally decorative in its form and design. From the collection of the CSMVS |
