FEATURES: Delhi-based partners of the multidisciplinary design studio Sarthak Sahil Design Co -- Sahil Bagga and Sarthak Sengupta – use age-old craft techniques to create furniture and fixtures for interior design. Among their many product designs, perhaps the most iconic is the signature Katran-style chair, with its unfolding sweep, where colourful ropes are used. ‘Katran’ is the term used for leftover pieces of colourful cloth such as georgette and cotton from textile mills and export houses, then recycled by spinning into ropes traditionally used for making khatiyas. The duo make use of the frugal, recycled waste to create altogether new-fangled pieces of furniture, combining sustainability and ethical ecology into product design. The high-backed frame of the chair is created by local blacksmiths in Rajasthan, onto which the pieces of cloth are woven.
