ANUP MAHAL, CORONATION ROOM, BIKANER
PERIOD: 1669-98

The displayed image is a fine example of Usta kaam, where raised designs are made using glue-like gesso paint. Since it required a smooth base – besides smaller boxes and trinkets – this technique was extensively employed to decorate walls and surfaces.

Taarabandi, a pattern reminiscent of a star-studded sky; and naqqashi, an array of tiny flowers and motifs drawn in a space the size of a thumb, were favoured formations at Bikaner. The craft is named after the community that excelled in it. The Usta craftsmen migrated from Multan to the Mughal Court at Delhi, before reaching Bikaner at the invitation of Raja Rai Singh.
