City Palace has been the residence for Jaipur’s royalty since the 18th century. The structure is built in white Makrana marble and its limestone walls are finished with eggshell plaster. Painting is the dominant element of surface decoration. Patterns are rendered in soft hues obtained from mineral colours.
The verandah overlooking the Mughal gardens at the back of Chandra Mahal features delicate floral patterns and life-size portraits of the past kings. For years to come, these illustrations will signify the subtle taste and majestic power of its residents – first to noble guests and political ambassadors, and later someday, to tourists.
