MALLIKARJUNA TEMPLE, PATTADAKAL
MATERIAL: Stone
YEAR: c. 740 AD

Pattadakal marks the transition from rock-cut architecture to constructed technique and has been earmarked as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The sculptural work on the panels and decorative wall designs - far exceeding earlier temples in number and variety - stand testimony to a highly-evolved building practice.

Archeological evidence suggests that the complex was used as a coronation site for the early Chalukyas and the main temples show great diversity of architectural features, drawn from various building styles, namely Rekha, Nagara, Prasada and Dravida Vimana.
