SALIM CHISHTI’S TOMB, FATEHPUR SIKRI, AGRA
MATERIAL: Marble
YEAR: 1580-81

This mausoleum was built by Akbar as a mark of respect to Sufi saint Sheikh Salim Chishti, who is said to have foretold the birth of Akbar’s heir, Prince Salim.

Work on this complex began in 1571. The main tomb is enshrined at the centre of a larger hall that can be entered through five doorways. A delicate filigreed jali, rendered in geometric patterns, cordons off the sanctum while lending it an ethereal aura as light filters in through its fine perforations.
