In Islamic architecture, which is limited by its choice of forms, metaphysical concepts are alluded through inventive repetition of shapes. Circles, triangles and hexagons tesselate naturally, affording infinite expansion - and hence, their popularity in Mughal architecture.
This influence intermingled with indigenous architecture and over time, tessellations became popular in Rajput structures too.
